A resolution on the situation of human rights in the DPRK, co-sponsored by 50 countries including the Republic of Korea, was adopted by consensus at the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on March 30 (Geneva time).
The ROK government notes that, in the resolution, the UNHRC welcomes the DPRK’s efforts including the implementation of human rights obligations and the participation in the 4th cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). The government also recognizes that the UNHRC emphasizes in the resolution the importance of dialogue and engagement, including inter-Korean dialogue, for improving the human rights situation in the DPRK.
The resolution stresses the importance of following up on the recommendations in the comprehensive report on the DPRK human rights situation issued by the High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2025 that reported on restrictions on specific human rights such as the freedom of movement and the freedom of expression and urged improvements therein. It also includes provisions calling for the immediate repatriation of abductees and the resumption of reunions of separated families, as well as encouraging the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
The ROK government will continue to cooperate with the international community to ensure the substantial improvement in the human rights situation of DPRK people.
